Sweetwater Adult Education serves the cities of Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, National City, and south San Diego as well as the communities of Bonita, Eastlake, Otay and San Ysidro. More than 40,000 individuals are enrolled annually. Approximately 30% attend English as a Second Language classes, 30% basic skills through the high school diploma, and 30% vocational programs. All other mandated program areas are also represented.

In addition, the President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee recommended that the National City Adult School model be replicated to better bridge the Digital Divide and California Assemblyman Juan Vargas nominated National City Adult School for a Technology Innovation Award.
Mr. Mercado, Principal at National City Adult school attributes much of his
success to the adult school philosophy that students are allowed to progress
at their own pace and they never use up all of their chances. Dedicated teachers
are there to help and give guidance as students pursue their educational goals.
